A little while ago while surfing the blog world, I came across the concept of painting cookie/cakes. So many possibilities! I wanted to try it out but I decided to wait for a better baking excuse than "because I feel like it" (my waistline can only handle so many of those). Easter seems like a good time to me! I chose to try this out on sugar cookies, which means I also got to test out the royal icing flooding technique. A good explanation of this can be found
here on a blog called
Cake Journal. My first flooded cookies came out... only ok. They were a bit lumpy and the outer edges were too obvious. I switched to a smaller piping tip and I think they came out great! A few air bubbles, but I know now to keep an eye out for that next time.
Such a nice clean slate! So I thought: who would want to paint cookies with me? My Mom of course! I brought everything over to her house and we set up there. We mostly painted by watering down the
icing gel colors
, but I also had some
edible markers
too. I also recommend using brand new paint brushes so you don't have to worry about paint on your cookies! When everything was out we sat down to paint and then it hit... I had no idea what to paint. They were going to be Spring/Easter cookies... but as soon as I sat down, my mind went blank. Thanks to this, and also the fact that there is a small learning curve when it comes to using the paint, our first few cookies (mine especially) we not very pretty. We got the hang of it though after a few, and I thought they came out great! It's really easy to see whose cookies were whose though, for example:

You get the idea. It was so much fun, and now that I know how to work with the paints I will definitely be doing this again. Now the real question is... how good do they taste? I loved them, but maybe I will have to get feedback from the people who will be getting them in the mail (I sure hope they last through shipping, we'll see!)
Happy Early Easter everyone!
Well I'll vouch for the cookies!! I tried them before and after the icing. The cookies were great, not too sweet/sugary or too buttery. They had a nice light flavor, and cooked up really well without losing their shape. Also, the icing was nice and light as well without being overwhelming! I wasn't sure if i'd be able to taste the "paints" or "markers" but I couldn't taste a thing!! And they turned out so cute! I think I'm going to have Melanie do some for Elliott's 1st grade class as his Birthday treat to share:)
